Kinderdijk, The Netherlands - Day 4 - July 10, 2019
I awoke very early in the morning and got a cup of coffee and stood on the Sun Deck on the top of the ship. It was a beautiful morning, crisp and quiet. We had not arrived in Kinderdijk yet so we were cruising across the lowlands of the Netherlands, it is very flat, and you can see forever. We arrived for an early morning visit to Kinderdijk and after some breakfast went on the morning walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of windmills. Kinderdijk is the home to a great collection of these old windmills that are currently all still working. Cody, our guide is a volunteer at the site and gave us a thorough explanation of the working of the windmills. I was most surprised to find out that the windmills are for moving water up and out of low-lying areas and not for grain milling. We left after a couple of hours and proceeded towards the Rhine. We had a very long day and night of cruising to arrive at our next stop, Cologne on the Rhine.
