Shetland islands, scotland - Day 16 - July 27, 2023
After a couple of days at sea we arrived in Lerwick, the main town of the Shetland Islands. As we entered the harbor there were many tall ships - they were having their annual Lerwick Tall Ships Races. The Shetland Islands are a very old part of Scotland which is part of the United Kingdom. We were very fortunate in that is was a sunny calm day - apparently that is quite unusual as it is often cloudy and windy. We took a small boat to the Mousa Island Nature Preserve for a 3 mile hike around this small island. While we were there we went to the Broch of Mousa, which is one of the best preserved Iron Age structures in Scotland - it dates to 300 BC. Not only did we see it, we went inside it and climbed to the top - very cool!
In the afternoon we went on a bus tour around the area and saw the Shetland Ponies. I am not a great fan of horses, but these guys were pretty cute!
